The application of water pollution source tracing with GIS

There are various types of data about water pollution prevention held by several government agencies. Lacking of integrative information sharing platform, when water pollution occur, the environmental authorities usually follow their own standard operation procedures to find the pollution source. It’s hard to preview some suspicious targets around the polluted area with existing information system, and to make some precious event data be well-recorded or be reutilized for value-added applications. Therefore, three main works are accomplished in this project to fix the situation. First task is data digitalization and examination of collected geographic information data. We digitalized 178 inlets of catchments, 76 catchments, and 2300 river parts. As for data examination, we discover some abnormal x-coordinates and y-coordinates in listed enterprises’ front door and discharge outlets. To correct the data, we informed all EPB to check and report the coordinates, and provided them with an auto-checking key-in user interface to ensure good data quality. Collecting attribute data of listed enterprises and compiling the wastewater characteristics of announced industries is also important work in the project. Attribute data including raw materials, hazardous wastes, chemical substances in wastewater and so forth is going to be applied to water pollution source tracking with GIS. Reviewing all kinds of literatures about wastewater characteristics, and categorizing characteristics with physical parameters and chemical parameters, we defined all announced industries’ wastewater characteristics with above-mention parameters, and used it as part of tools for water pollution source tracking. The third achievement is system constructing. We established a system for informing water pollution events and improve the function of water pollution source tracing module in WPGIS by developing the method of water pollution source tracing and providing user with value-added experiences through spatial analysis. We have already held three training lessons for environmental authorities this year. In sum, by data digitalization, examination, compiling and utilizing, it strengthens the power of water pollution source tracking for environmental authorities.
